How College Sports Can Survive
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | June 17, 2020 | B. David Ridpath

Without revenue from the NCAA Final Four tournament and other sources of income, it is clear that the intercollegiate athletics industry faces difficult choices from the consequences of the coronavirus. College sports will confront a continuing crisis until adequate testing is in place, along with social distancing at athletic events, or a vaccine is created.

In essence, every college athletic director must have a plan that anticipates reduced or canceled 2020-2021 fall and winter sports seasons, along with reduced institutional and student fee subsidies. Thanks to declining enrollment, the 98 percent of all athletic programs that require significant subsidies to operate will suffer from austerity measures.

Athletic departments cannot be treated as a sacred cow anymore and must share in this economic burden.

Even if the pandemic didn’t occur, higher education was already facing drops in enrollment thanks to lower birth rates and other options beyond the traditional four-year university. Tuition dollars and mandatory student athletic fees are tied to enrollment, and the future is not bright in that area.

Couple this reality with the NCAA’s decision to allow schools to determine if they can grant 2020-2021 scholarships for athletes whose sports are now canceled, and we must conclude that the financial future for intercollegiate athletics is more precarious than it has been in years. It is far better to show foresight and expect a downturn and be wrong than to create false hope.

My GAS function has failed on college sports since they have chosen the BLM over the fans. No more of my money or time will be wasted on their silly games.

I was barely giving them time anyway. I’d occasionally go to a college football party when my alma mater was playing. I’ll do that (once per year), but I’m not doing anything else. Additionally, I’m bad-mouthing most professional sports at any opportunity. They really are over-paid, self-important morons.

Maybe start recruiting pale guys once in a while too. Blatant discrimination in D1 football.

College athletics are in deep trouble, not because of financial concerns but because the athletes have taken over the programs. In the past two weeks two incidents already where football coaches (Ferentz at Iowa and Gundy at Oklahoma State) have been cowed by their players. And further the Iowa players have essentially told their fans F*** You if you don’t support our protests. I will miss the NFL (maybe it’s just time to grow up) but I will really miss college football. Nothing like fall Saturdays with big college match-ups.

The NCAA exploits Black people. The best way to protect Blacks from exploitation is to shut down college sports.

College big-time “sports” are no longer either college or sports. They are professional training leagues. They have no place in an education system. Get rid of them.

Sports used to be a place to escape politics and life’s troubles. That is no longer the case.

Let ‘em die. A college is supposed to be an educational institution, not a farm league for thugs-in-training.

Post WW2 my school canceled all athletic scholarships. It basically took back the school. If colleges and universities did the same, academics would improve, costs would drop and campus rapes would drop.

Actually, I do.

“I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point Football Player”

Did you see President Trump's speech to the graduating class?

He honored that plaque.

When my father's generation returned from WW2, many of them became coaches, and were instrumental in molding the next generation of men.

Football was a prime tool for teaching life's lessons.

That's why the left seeks to destroy it.

Just like they seek to destroy the family.
