15 yards is about the maximum effective range for the #12 shot on small pests.

Ha! I guess it works but is funny looking. And you need some room to maneuver that thing in the garden.

I used to carry a Single Six with the .22 mag cylinder. The first shot was a CCI shot cartridge.
They were pure poison on snakes up to around 10 feet. After that, mostly useless.

That set up ensures that you maintain the correct social distance from the varmint before shooting it.

Why not just use a pistol?

Why not just use a pistol? Astute question. Future article.

Exactly, get something like a Taurus Judge. Shoots .45 colt or 410 bore shot shells. Varmit revolver right there.

I use a 38 Special with snake shot.

One of my interests is .22 smoothbores. I have a Remington with a Rouledge bore and it does pattern nicely compared to the others (which aren't bad). The Mossberg Targo has a short oversized tube that screws on the end, as well as a rifled tube.
Remington promoted their Mo-Skeet-o minature trap with the "Routledge Girls".

My choice is a .410 pistol with #9 buckshot for snakes. There is also many useful loads for those pistols.

I used to do pigeon control when in college. Used a smooth bore 22 and it was impressive. Take em down in flight 50 to 60 ft. Great little shotgun
..if you can handle the recoil. lol

Shot shells in pistols, by themselves, pose significant problems for use as garden guns.
In a .22, the patterns through rifled barrels are terrible, useful to maybe 15 feet.
In larger calibers, with larger shot, not only are the patterns terrible, but the shot is dangerous to much longer distances. #9 shot can be dangerous to 60 yards.

Florida Panhandle. The ten foot ones are not too common. They are eaten by the 20 foot ones.

Have you a theory as to how the Routledge bore works?
