I am not sympathetic to the would be possible crook but no one should put themselves in the position these guys did. One, they are not cops. Two, they had no legal authority to operate as potential security guards. Three, no reason to go running about the neighborhood with a long gun in a residential neighborhood playing vigilante That is how I see it.
As far as how this may play out in court, without this becoming a political football, perhaps manslaughter at most. With the media and political oversight, it will be charged as murder 2 and probably convicted. This is not a Trayvon situation beyond a black white issue.
