When I got into the biz in the early 1980s, I promised the Lord that I would never use the writing talent He gave me to frighten or slander people.
I believe I kept my word over 25 years.
Mind you, I took up newspapering in my late 20s, straight out of the Army. That military experience and the little extra maturity helped me a lot, compared to the typical recent graduate who got into journalism “because I want to change the world.”
To them I say: Get your head out of the clouds, follow the facts wherever they lead you, and get your copy in on time.
