(I am considering doing a 308 build DPMS-compatible platform similar to the one in this article, but have a few questions.)
Its been said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Ever since I caught the AR-15 at-home-building bug a few years ago, I've thought several times that I would like to conduct a from-scratch, at-home build of the AR-15's beefier and more potent compatriot, the AR-10 chambered in .308 Win. In particular, I've wanted to pull together a flexible, jack-of-all-trades .308 Win. with a feature set that could comfortably transition between target shooting from a bench rest, use in the field and, if necessary, defensive applications.
I really liked what I learned about Aero Precision and the M5E1, so I dropped their information into the "flexible .308 project" pot simmering at the back of my mental stove in hopes that an opportunity to work with the company would present itself. It did in the form of a phone call from American Rifleman. Gil, what do you know about Aero Precision? Would you be interested in meeting with them to discuss a possible project? With a smile on my face I said that not only would I be interested, I already had a project in mind... . And the rest is history! Or, at least, the review you're reading now.

I don’t get it...If you can build an AR15 why can’t you build an AR10? It’s just putting together pre-made parts...
Questions:
1. Are Aero Precision Upper parts worth the extra money?
2. I was thinking about using a 22 or 24 inch barrel. Would 18 or 20 inches do just as well for target shooting?
3. I am leaning toward a 3-4 lb single stage trigger. Opinions on good brands or for 2-stage triggers?
4. pro and con for rifle length buffer tube vs carbine length.
5. Any favorite stocks?
Almost forgot:
6. Gen 1 vs gen 2 receiver?
I think you are correct. It’s an exercise in parts assembly only moderately more difficult than putting together a bicycle. You could probably even make the lower receiver out of wood since it only holds the trigger assembly.
It is not very hard. I would just get to select the parts I want.
I think these just started coming out in 2019 if you werent aware...
1. Yes, the enhanced m5e1 upper offers significant advantages including the use of Gen 2 m-lok handguards
2.18” 6.5 creedmoor premium fluted ss from ballistic advantage
3. Geissele SSP ( single stage precision)
4. Dictated by the stock choice
5.magpul PRS GEN3
1. Thanks. I was wondering what the difference was between M5 and M5E1.
I dont want to be a party pooper but you can buy one hell of an upper and lower at palmetto state armory, the lower has a real tight adjustable stock with nice cheek rest and of the 2 i got one has enhanced polished single stage trigger polished and nickel boron coated and one has a 2 stage polished and plated the same both under 300 when i got them.
there in stock 249 single stage and its sweet 299 for 2 stage
the uppers can be ordered with nickel boron bcg and stainless barrel about 549 although the one i like is out of stock right now you can get on list to be notified when in stock , inventory changes daily
the fit is super tight n right and both triggers are smooth as silk total price 850 plus sights for a real nice one
I am super happy with my purchase there , you will have to buy mags but they are cheap for pmag 20
cant imagine you can build cheaper / good luck

Space Cannon!
How far away are the targets you intend to shoot going to be? Seems to me an AR pistol in 300 Blackout for targets inside 200 years would be ideal. Targets 600 yards out need more barrel, obviously. My AR Space Gun has a 28 Stainless Cryogenic treated barrel. I have shot it at 1,000 yard competitions. I got a Wooden Dollar at Camp Butner with it. First sighter in the X ring.
I read A-10. I need to pay better attention. This is an exciting and epic build, but a Warthog from scratch would be even MORE epic.
The is not the same level of standardization across the various manufacturers, even among the same type of large-frame AR. And there are a number of different types.
One word of advice, that little teeny hole that has to be drilled to retain the spring/detente on the pin that holds the whole thing together? Try and get that one drilled for you. Just sayin.
Be still my beating heart...I need one of those for my Rock River Arms LAR-8.
Of course, I’d need my shoulder ortho doc on speed dial.
Right now I am looking at 500-600 yards, but I would like to try 1,000 yards.
LOL! It’s not that hard. Take a big gun, and build an airplane around it.
From the article...
“Secondly, AR-10 pattern rifles do not have the benefit of an agreed-upon set of technical standards like Mil-Spec AR-15s do. AR-10 parts sourced from different companies and vendors may not fit together properly.”
I didn’t know that...except for the paperwork that came with my RRA LAR-8 warning me against swapping out non-RRA parts.
1,000 yds is really pushing .223. The times i did it I popped half the primers.
