I think I heard that story before and it still brings a smile to my face. Not because I'm a sadist, but because your usually anti-death penalty crowd doesn't even bring it up. Ever. Everybody knows and understands that vicious Dickie reaped exactly what he sowed.
I can't help wondering what he was thinking while he was choking to death. It probably wasn't "Wasn't I clever about cheating the hangman?"

Sounds like that would have been Julius Streicher. He was a ceaseless loudmouth right to the end. During the time of the Third Reich he was such a belligerent wackadoodle even the Nazis couldn't stand him - that's saying something.

Dick Hickock was imprisoned out of state when his cell mate, also a Kansas native, mentioned he had worked on Clutter’s farm and thought they had a safe to keep their money.
I never heard what happened to him, other than he confirmed suspicions held by the Kansas Major Case Squad.

He squealed for the reward money.
The odd thing is Clutter was known to dislike carrying cash, even paying for small items with a check.
There was no safe either.
All they got away with was a binocular, radio and a silver dollar which Nancy had saved as it had some kind of sentimental value. Also I think a few dollars cash the family had.

Yep. I seem to recall that the hangman was a Sargent Joseph Wood. In addition to moving the knot, he had him stand slightly off the center of the trap door so he banged up his face falling through. He may have disclosed this detail in the same interview.
Never try to cheat the hangman. They can do stuff like this if they are so inclined.
