I "educated" someone at work today and he was none-too-happy. For some folks this is a serious health matter. For others, it is, from my standpoint, looking a fool wearing a cloth mask, especially the young.

The bottom line here is that a cloth mask will NOT prevent infection from SARS-CoV-2 and it is clear that they are only concerned about "slowing the spread" to ensure that it's drawn out as long as possible (the latter being IMHO).

So what do you suggest for those who can’t get PPE?

A cloth mask containing a filter - even a couple of layers of folded paper towel is said to be good from some study I read here.

Throw the filter away and wash the mask for the next use.

“from my standpoint, looking a fool wearing a cloth mask”

What do you care what others think of your looks?

cheap face mask used by nurses
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHUrSX2cJyA

I use three masks when I dont use my n95s.

surgicial mask, one i bought from a nascar company, and something I came up with on amazon that attached to a hat that is a sunblocker for your face made out of cloth

it WILL lessen the viral load..you could also use paper towels or other such things to create a layer

https://composite-resources-mask.com/

one MD here pointed out very early on that you must lessen the viral load in order to have your best chance at surviving.

a simple mask is better than nothing if you are sneezing or coughing....its not 100% protection for other people..and its no protection for you....

stay away from people who are sneezing and hacking....wash your hands and don't touch you face especially your eyes....

nobody can be absolutely free from danger in this world...

So, I guess it's useless also to cough into anything other than an N95 mask, because only an N95 mask offers any impedance to transmission(?)

I bet if I had a cough, and was in the produce department of a grocery store filled with "cloth mask deniers", they'd be urging me to put on a cloth mask if that's all that was available.

“It is WELL-ESTABLISHED that surgical masks are only effective at preventing the wearer from infecting others (hence their use in hospital settings, i.e. operating theaters),”

Why are thousands of hospital workers wearing them in lieu of the N95 when it is not available? To prevent infecting COVID-19 patients with SARS-CV-2?

These cloth masks and surgical masks are to protect others from the wearer. If the wearer wants protection, wear at least an N95 respirator.

You probably don’t know this, but the US military has ordered all personnel to wear a cloth mask when no other mask is available. This is coming from the top experts in the world for infectious disease. The real bottom line is that you use the best tool available to you at any given time. If you don’t have N95 masks and you want to breathe, then you choose the next alternative to keep breathing.

You make a valid point about which I’ve been beating a drum to deaf ears, it seems.

My hypothesis is that the virus gets anchored in the body in the respiratory tract and becomes a serious systemic problem for those which high ACE2 blood levels from there, compromising blood-oxygen levels and infecting organs along the way.

I believe that eliminating its “base of operations”, so-to-speak, permits the immune system to quickly eradicate it even in >50 year-olds like me & my wife.

You are generally correct.

However, a cloth, homemade mask is FAR better than nothing.

People like my wife, with comorbidities, should avoid going out altogether during these shutdowns; and when they do, they must take every possible precaution available to them. A cloth mask is better than nothing. They shoudl double/triple up on it.

We have the N-95s, nitrile gloves, and hand sanitizer I bought for my family in January when the Chinese Virus news hit the USA.

We will keep an adequate stock of this, and other, PPE for the future.

EVERY Freeper should be prepared. This will happen again and the next Chinese bioweapon may be the big one and not a test run.

The idea that masks are the panacea, it’s just pie-in-the-sky simplistic. Masks only mitigate one avenue of exposure. How are these people protecting their eyes? How are these people decontaminating their skin and their clothing? How are these people decontaminating their shoes after they walk through a grocery store that 1000 other people potentially carrying the virus have walked through? Before you enter a living space, do you clear through a hot zone, warm zone, and cold zone? I think these masks only give people a false sense of security that results in other break downs. If you don’t know what you’re doing the potential for cross-contamination is extreme. Your mask isn’t going to do any good if your environment Is a contaminated mess.

I think you make a good point which most people are gradually arriving at anyway. My suspicion is that you are going to have to have a mask of some kind to be in almost any public place. Such a mask is obviously not subject to on the spot evaluation for efficacy. It is more of a ritualistic thing that I believe you are going to have to have to go to your supermarket.

I park in my driveway.
Take off my short rain boots.

spray them with lysol

let them sit outside for hours
then go wash them outside with the hose

it is very hard to stay completely virus free.

I posted a Dr who was showing how to clean groceries and immediately spotted something he was doing wrong that could cause cross contamination

You just have to do the best that you can do to lessen the viral load and hope for the best until they find a treatment they can give you without having to be at deaths door at the hospital

Most Drs are not going to give Trump’s drug on a telemedicine visit right now.

I watched someone die of lung cancer.Breathing issues are a nightmare. I am doing all that I can to avoid going through that hell

Bolshevik. Since most of these masks are coming from China and India, have you seen the videos, I would take my chance with a cloth covering first. I am tired of these so called studies. The facts are the ChiComms hoisted this crap on us. Probably with the help of Diane Feinstein. The best thing about this disaster is that Mexico will be paying for our wall after the oil deal that was signed yesterday. Thank God for President Trump.
