Are Gun Stores ‘Essential’ Businesses?

Yes, especially when jails and prisons are releasing inmates early.

Law-abiding citizens want the right to buy a gun, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Police have stopped responding to many 911 calls, and massive numbers of inmates are being released early from prison. If shortages become more severe or if lots of police fall ill, chaos may very will ensue. People would rather be safe than sorry.

If the police can’t be there to provide protection, people are far safer if they have a gun when confronted by a criminal. That is particularly true for the most vulnerable citizens, such as women and the elderly.

But many state governments across the country, from California to New York, are classifying gun shops as “non-essential” and ordering them to close. Some express a deep concern with gun sales at this time. Senator Chris Murphy (D., Ct.) tweeted that it is “so sickening” that people want to “to stockpile assault weapons, instead of food, to get ready for the coming Coronavirus civil war.”

A surprising exception is Illinois, where on Friday Democratic governor J. B. Pritzker included firearm and ammunition suppliers on the list of “essential businesses and operations.”

The danger of the coronavirus for cops is understandable. Telecommuting isn’t an option for them, and their jobs were already dangerous. Police departments in Michigan, Texas, Colorado, and Pennsylvania are ordering their officers not to respond to certain calls. Despite this policy, officers across the country in such cities as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles have already contracted the virus.

My gun store/range here in E. Washington state is open but has had to modify business operations during the pandemic.

Ask when the govt agents and their families need ammo or weapons.

Then extend the answer to all of us who need to do their own self-defense.

Our local range, Reno Guns & Range, set they are essential—in sales, service, parts, and ammo. They closed the range side down for recreational shooting, only allowing safety and function checks, plus qualifications (police, etc.). Sales are handled curbside. I think they are only gun shop open in Reno.

Well, ammo certainly is. And for repairs those stores are essential certainly is. Hunting is allowed during “stay at home” order periods.

By the way, it seems that over 75% of all employees are “essential”.

If you’re a small person stalked by a larger person upset that you rebuffed all their sexual advances then gun shops are literally a life or death necessity.

It doesn’t help you one damned bit if they track the person down after they kill you...and that is the entirety of what a restraining order does for you.

Liberals and “THE DONOR CLASS” are buying guns...Some for the first time.

So the answer is ....Yes....They are essential.

Even in California.

Many liberal states are trying to close down gun sales. They have also closed down churches. Liquor stores are open though and they are arguing that abortion providers need to stay open. So Constitutional rights need to be halted but whatever feeds government is essential.

I am opposed to this whole “essential” vs. “non-essential” rationale.
To the owner and employees, every business is essential.

The government can no more say that Gun Stores are non-essential, than Britain could say that Powder boxes, muskets and cannon were non-essential.
