The left doesn’t hate Putin or Russia. What it hates is the fact the Putin helped both Trump and Hillary during the 2016 election with minuscule sums of money spent on targeted ads, hoping to increase political contention in the US. Russia had previously only helped the Democrats, by putting liberal journalists and magazines on their payroll.

It’s not anything new or uniquely nefarious - as a foreign policy tool, getting the barbarian to fight the barbarian is something that’s been around since before Roman times. But previously, the Russians had only helped the Democratic barbarians.
