The US Navy and Boeing announced Monday they had flown two fighter jets in exercises under the control of a third jet nearby, proving that multiple pilotless combat missions can be run from a separate aircraft.

Actually, the F-35 talks to a mothership. It controls the other drones.

Not twenty years. Technology is moving much faster than that. The F-35 already can maneuver, pull Gs much higher than a human pilot can take.

I’ll betcha a two-seater configuration is doable in the non-VTOL birds.
