Made me look up what “Evangelical” means so as to double-check my understanding of same.
If that law existed in my State it would be worth fighting. I would NOT want to attend a 'gun free zone' Church.
unfortunately we have a school at our church and currently the law still says that it’s a school ground even on sunday in North Carolina. They are trying to get it changed to fix this issue in the legislature.

In Europe, they attack Catholic churches.
In the southern US, bad guys would very likely encounter well armed Hispanic Catholics and equally armed Redneck Baptists. One might guess Episcopal members would be the last armed. Synagogues might need to consider the safety issue after so many attacks especially in the northern states.
It’ll be interesting to hear what his motive may have been in choosing this particular church or religion. Could be he was out to get one particular person or thought a C of C wouldn’t be armed or something else.
The problem is if you get caught somehow carrying illegally, you can loose your permit forever.
Stupid laws need to be changed, not ignored except as a last resort.
If you get caught before. If you get caught after. At least you and your family are live. Dead is a last resort.
Baptists are about the same, except musical instruments in church. And, of course, only members go to Heaven. (That’s weird.)
