California’s new ammo law hurts the wrong people — and doesn’t stop ‘bad guys’ with guns

When California started requiring people to pass background checks to buy ammunition on July 1, hunters hoped for the best and braced for the worst. What happened was far worse than we feared.

The premise of the new law is that people who can’t have guns shouldn’t have ammo either. I don’t know anyone who disputes that. Bad guys shouldn’t have guns or ammo.

~~SNIP~~

Here’s where it fell apart: The state Department of Justice finalized regulations to implement the law just before it took effect. There was no time, and no effort, to raise awareness, no time for gun owners to verify they were in the database, and most critically, that their ID matched their information in the database.

In the first four months, the checks thwarted 101 ammunition purchases by prohibited persons, and a staggering 62,000 purchases by people who had every right to buy ammunition. More than half of the rejections were due to data mismatches, such as an address change; one-third were because buyers weren’t in the database.

What’s wrong with buying in Nevada?

I'm sure that is frowned upon, but I'm also sure that literally tons of ammo is being driven over Donner Pass and on westbound I-10, as well as a few other places.

It was never intended to stop criminals. The purpose was to take guns from non-violent, honest citizens.

Illegal to bring such ammo back unless you have an exemption like an 03FFL/COE.

I highly recommend everyone in California get an 03FFL and COE...you can then purchase ammo online and have it delivered to your house. The O3FFl/COE doesn’t exempt one from the background check IF you purchase from an in California vendor, but you can buy from vendors out of state, you don’t have to mess with this background check crap, and you get much better prices.

Unless you have an exemption listed in the law, it’s illegal for the average Californian to purchase ammo out of state and import it to California. The rumor is that the CA DOJ has agents at gun shows and vendors close to the border watching for California customers.

Time to quit putting up with their subversive tyranny.

You are talking about California, remember. They voted for this.

Actually, it is working EXACTLY as planned. Note the excessive number of rejections .... think like a low down scum sucking dog and it all makes sense .... it was not designed to work.

Do the ag stations now ask if you have fruits or vegetables or ammunition?

Ammo leaves Nevada by the pick-up truck load and squirreled away in trunks of cars headed to Kalifornia. So far I haven’t seen anyone get caught. The CHP will start watching the big box stores in Reno this Spring. Only a matter of time before some gets busted. It will be like the booze and cig trades back east.

Might be funny to see CHP officers get arrested in Nevada like the Mass. officers did in Hinsdale, NH after crossing the state line and parking in the State Liquor store parking lot to photograph license plates.

Stories (second hand) are circulating that this happens, but it’s probably FUD.

I have purchased ammo in Reno and Carson City for years, but just before the ammo law went into effect, sporting goods stores and gun shops there began asking for ID to see if you were from California. I doubt most would sell to someone from California now.

Isn’t this just back door gun registration? Ex: if you buy 9mm and they don’t have a record of you owning a 9mm pistol then you must have one. I seriously doubt they are ever going to purge records, even for the law abiding.

Not that it would affect what gun-grabbers might do, but many firearms are "multi-caliber". You can change upper assemblies & mags on most ARs; you can swap cylinders with some revolvers; and you fit different slide/barrel/magazine combinations to many auto pistols. A law abiding citizen might therefore purchase ammunition in a half-dozen (or more) different calibers for a single firearm...

Sadly Nevada and Kalifornia have an operating agreement that allows the CHP to operate 8 miles into Nevada. That said most gun stores in Reno are outside of the 8 miles.
