Elliott’s speech was direct and rattling. Her overarching message is that racism can be destroyed through education because it is fueled by ignorance more than hate. It’s a topic she’s as passionate about today as she was 50 years ago. Even her sweatshirt carries the message: “Prejudice is an emotional commitment to ignorance.”

“It’s time to get over the idea of different races, there’s only one: the human race,” Elliott said.

The tiny white-haired woman seemed to captivate her audience, who chorused in approval throughout the speech.

The event also honored five women who are fighting on behalf of civil rights and social justice in San Diego.
