ah, a new trick by the moore crowd; “everybody did it in Alabama” is a malignant slur against the people of the state.

and obviously wrong as hell. there were apparently a lot of perfectly reasonable conservatives that that frowned on his dating practices in AL, because he lost a senate seat that had been republican since freaking howell heflin.

Women marry a lot later now than they did sixty years ago. This is a fact.

My own grandmother told me she married at age 16 - might have even been 15, not sure - and her husband was 30 and a widower.

This wasn’t Alabama, it was Oklahoma.

In the mid- 1950s, most - and I do mean most - girls were married before a year after HS graduation.

Mores and expectations do change, they sure have in my lifetime.

Not that I think Hollywood and real life are exactly the same, but if you watch The Quiet Man, the John Wayne character is an American of Irish ancestry who goes to Ireland and marries a local. And it is all about cultural differences. In the story it’s very clear that the YL the Wayne character courts is considered “over the hill” for matrimonial purposes.
