Many delegates in the convention are pledged to support certain candidates on the 1st ballot. If it goes past the 1st ballot, all bets are off and everyone is free to support any candidates, including some such as Hillary who didn’t even run in the primaries.
If there is a deadlocked convention, Hillary could well be a favorite to emerge from the back room smoke filled room horse trading.

risk video of her being dragged into a van again,
generate staged events while claiming she is running a campaign for a year.
And she can take pot shots from the sidelines without being the target of attacks from rivals.

If she jumps in the race (and minding the fact that running and jumping aren’t really her bag), it’s not going to be while there is still a crowded debate stage to compete with. It certainly will not be with a crowded debate stage with Gabbard still potentially in the mix.
I would expect a lot of clear media, organizational and staffing moves to predate her entry into the primary. the last campaign was heavily stage managed and she barely beat a socialist who wasn’t even a democrat the year prior in a pitifully small field, and the primaries would have been even closer if not for her campaign’s delegate rigging.
If she runs, there’s going to be an amazingly sudden clarity among the chattering classes that the nation needs a savior, and after a short period of hand wringing, those chattering classes will suddenly realize that savior could only be Hillary. At that point, a camera will pan to her, where she’ll rip off that Broyhill loveseat cover she’s been wearing in public to reveal a fit and trim figure in a designer pantsuit.
