When I was a kid we had a two mile walk down the hill to the bus and 2 miles back up in the afternoon. We did get a ride when it was raining.

When I was a kid I walked five miles up to the school and five miles up the hill on the way back. I relished the rain because it was the only fresh water I got all week to wash off the mud from cleaning out the stables and the pig pens.
