Headshots are relatively easy to pull off on the practice range, surprisingly hard to pull off in reality on the two-way firing range. Especially when you are legally responsible for every round you fire downrange that might hit someone else. Even well trained police officers and military can fail to get a headshot in combat.

Not saying one shouldn’t go for it, but that a headshot attempt and ‘more practice if you miss’ is not always the answer. Another answer is heavy 12 gauge slugs - dump a few in center of mass and even if they have a trauma plate and plate carrier keeping the slugs out and preventing penetration, they will still have the wind knocked out of them, their diaphragm paralyzed and be at least temporarily disabled. Plenty of videos of police or security force member being knocked out of action despite their armor with a single slug that didn’t penetrate.

While our virtual training isn't the stress of a firefight, it does simulate those situations. Our facility has a virtual system called VAST, which has many shoot/don't shoot scenarios.

Even my paper target routine sets up 4ea. 5" targets, so that I move randomly from one to the next at a steady rate of fire (not aim and hold).
