The Senate Judiciary Committee has shelved the consideration of a nominee for a key circuit judge position after an uprising of conservative opposition. The committee postponed its vote on Halil Suleyman Sul Ozerden to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals shortly after Sen Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) informed Republicans he was opposed. Hawley joined Sen. Ted Cruz in opposition.
Hawley began informing colleagues of his decision on Thursday morning, just hours before Ozerden was going to be considered before the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to source familiar with the conversations. With Cruz (R-Texas) and Hawley in opposition, Ozerden now needs Democratic support to receive a favorable recommendation by the committee, where Republicans enjoy a two-seat advantage.
Ozerden is a friend of acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and has been strongly supported by both Sens. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.). But conservatives have been skeptical of his credentials, specifically his ruling in favor of dismissing a challenge to the Affordable Care Acts contraception coverage mandate, which he deemed premature.

Let's get a real conservative for the seat on the 5th circuit!
So why did Trump nominate him?
Props to Senators Cruz and Hawley. Yay!!!
So why did Trump nominate him?
****************************
Unwisely went with this candidate being promoted by the Haley Barbour wing (i.e., Chamber of Commerce open-borders type) of the Mississippi Republican Party.
Because he was probably browbeaten by Mulvaney and other Establishmentarians!
There are Conservatives in the U.S. Senate?
First time I heard about it.
In February 2018, Trump nominated Mark J. Bennett for the Ninth Circuit Court.
In July 2018, every Democrat voted “YES” for Bennett.
27 Republicans voted “NO” against Bennett.
Trump and the Senate “Conservatives” did nothing.
Bennett sailed right through and is now a reliable Hard Left vote on the 9th - for the rest of his life!
Re: So why did Trump nominate him?
16 dimensional chess.
Winning!
Good news. Let’s hope it’s the end of this nomination.
I take that as sarcasm.
Re: “I take that as sarcasm.”
Yes, as you should.
