What a combination! My aunt had a Jack Russell. They are simply too much dog for me. All my life, I’ve had large, placid, quiet dogs—very soothing presences (well, maybe the Great Danes were a little jumpy, but basically darling dogs). When I take this one to the vet, he looks ready to give me a sedative.

They do have a mind of their own, and they are ALWAYS hungry. I have 3, and the oldest is the calmest, but I've seen him guard my grandson like a Rotty or a Pit. It's why he goes everywhere when I am out.
When I go fishing he goes.....never wanders out of visual and warns me when others are around, 4-legged or 2.

My half-Newfie’s best buddy was a Westie—he was an absolutely handsome and perfect little gentleman—he charmed everyone!

How old is your grandson? (i.e., does the dog feel especially responsible to protect short people, or does he protect everyone equally?)

They are very sturdy, solidly constructed dogs from what I’ve seen.

Grandson is a toddler of 2. He wants to be out with grandpa when he is working on something.
I've watched the boys set up a perimeter around the kid. He's the center of the pack. They are herding dogs, and he's their charge. If he falls, one of them will sit by him until he gets up and then they all move along.
The boys are friendly with everyone as long as one of us is with them, they figure everything is ok. But they make a lot of noise with strangers.

I’ve got one that I actually fished with a couple of times, just because I wanted s photo of some fish taken with one. Less than ideal, to be sure.
