Take this story for what it is worth, but I know somehow who says they took care of a dying scientist who had worked for the military. While taking care of him a federal agent came to his door and told him to not divulge any thing this man says even if you think he is delirious.
Long story short this scientist relayed how back in the 1970s he was on a team that developed a ship mounted laser that could and did knock a fighter plane out of the sky.

Ca 1978, Shreveport Times, one line: “The US Air Force confirmed today that they had successfully shot down a missile using laser technology”. No other comment. I remember thinking to myself... “this should be front page news”. I was an E8 at Barksdale at the time. What has happened in the 40 years since in R&D?

back in the 1970s he was on a team that developed a ship mounted laser that could and did knock a fighter plane out of the sky. In the 80's we were shown that we had a spaced based laser that could make popcorn. Lots and lots of popcorn.
