There is a lot of national pride and racial pride in China, as you will find almost anywhere in the world. We would do well to try to better understand the Chinese people and find compromises in which we all benefit. Brinkmanship is a dangerous game.
Part of our problem in the USA is we have officially banished pride in our nation and our culture. That is what demonization of the White Man is all about.
