Well, of course. I hated that he used an old tune of his and Taupin’s and just altered the lyrics a bit.

Bernie wrote the lyrics to the Diana song.
Elton does change the lyrics around. There is an interview of him in his heyday while he was at the piano talking about Bernie’s lyrics on Tiny Dancer with Bernie and his GF present.
He changed it around quite a bit.

YIKES! That makes elton even MORE of a hack.
Just...WOW.
That being said, I am not the piano player elton is, and probably never will be, even if I practiced several hours a day.
But, on more than one occasion, I have had to come up with a song for a wedding, a funeral, or some other event at the last minute. And, even when I was very emotionally involved, I can honestly say I never rehashed a previous work. I thought the Diana song was very disrespectful because of it being a “Marilyn” rehash.
At the time, watching the funeral live on TV, I was stunned as I recognized the intro.
Just my opinion, but with some experience in that kind of thing.

The amazing thing about Elton is that this old man with pudgy hands can hammer that piano. Try hitting the keys as hard as he does for just a little while. It hurts and tires you out.
