I'm an Army vet from 1985. The company where I work hired an Army vet from 2010ish who faked a back injury and received a ton of money for life from the Army. I think he got 85% of his pay. He was a terrible employee who lied about the work he did and we had to fire him. No I'm not in favor of giving him more things for free.
PS: I got very very little for free after I got out.
My wife and I both come from military families. In previous generations people got and expected very little after they got out. Many faced extreme hardship related to their honorable service. It is only in the past 30 or so years that scamsters really figured out how to fleece the military system. Unfortunately some of our own family members now fall into this category.
For 15 years we have set up displays honoring military personnel at museums, special events on and off base, VFWs, schools, parades, fairs, and numerous other venues. Few people have more respect for military personnel than we do, but a colonel friend of ours who was the head of the Old Soldiers Home in Retsil, WA told us about all the scammers he had to deal with. The place was filled with many people who were drafted and spent 2 years in the military, some who never even went oversees let along went into combat and managed to parlay that into a free ride for the rest of their lives. At the same time there were many soldiers who made true sacrifices got nothing because the scammers already had sucked up everything. This causes much of the problems with the VA as well.
