Two More Mass Shootings That Gun Control Wouldn’t Stop

Sadly, two mass shooting have occurred again over the past weekend. One in Dayton, Ohio, and one in El Paso, Texas. These mass shootings are needless and tragic, they threaten the safety of the American public, and they’re often carried out by society’s worst individuals.

So, why do politicians continue to push gun control which would have done nothing to save lives? Why aren’t more legislators encouraging individuals to exercise their Second Amendment rights? Why do American public officials not simply recognize, once and for all, the big elephant in the room: The Constitutional right to self-defense?

Both (Most) States Are Concealed Carry-Friendly

Just over one month ago, the Ohio House Panel approved a bill allowing Constitutional concealed carry, the right to carry without a license. Texas is a “shall-issue” state, automatically granting a concealed carry permit to any individual who applies and isn’t a felon. Both states maintain “Stand Your Ground” laws, affording individuals the right to self-defense with lethal force as needed, with no duty to retreat.

All but five states – Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – allow private individuals to maintain a concealed-carry permit of some form. It’s only been a few days, yet the mainstream media is already spinning these tragedies to promote more anti-gun rhetoric, while discarding any solutions that maintain public safety. Left-leaning publication Vox claims that the “good guy with a gun” argument is a myth, that no quick response to a mass shooter is good enough.

Let’s explain why that’s wrong:

Facts of the Two Shootings

The Dayton shooter legally purchased his gun and shot 14 people, 9 of whom were killed. He used an AR-15 pistol chambered in 5.56/.223 with a 100-round drum magazine. According to Dayton police, the shooter carried out his attack in a public setting in approximately 30 seconds, firing 41 rounds before he was struck and killed by police. The El Paso shooter legally purchased his rifle and shot and killed 22 people in a Wal-Mart. He used a WASR 10, a semiautomatic variant of the AK-47, chambered in 7.62x39mm. The shooter began his rampage at approximately 10:39 AM and was apprehended by police at approximately 10:45 AM.

Good Guys with Guns Quickly Stopped the Shootings

The argument that “the good guy with a gun doesn’t work” stands on shaky ground. In just 30 seconds, the Dayton shooter was dispatched by police. Police reacted as quickly as possible to the El Paso shooter, ending the attack in six minutes. If police presence wasn’t a factor, any private individuals already present with concealed-carry permits could have also dispatched the shooters. In fact, we can look at 11 recent examples of “good guys with guns” directly stopping, even preventing mass shootings.

What else could have stopped the shooters in these moments? This is an important question to ask public officials. It’s also important that their answers be supported by objective fact, such as whether their suggestions (which likely include calls for new gun control) would have worked.

Politicians Continue to Give the Wrong Answers

Democratic presidential candidate Tim Ryan is already campaigning with these tragedies. On Sunday, he called for a new assault weapon ban in response to these two shootings. But 13 people were recently killed in Virginia by a shooter who only used two .45-caliber handguns. The 1994 assault weapon ban was allowed to expire in Congress in 2004, illustrating that bans like these are ineffective. President Trump has called for expanding Red Flag laws – which allow any individual to report a gun owner for gun confiscation with no due process – and implementing a universal background check in response to this weekend’s violence. Except it’s already been proven that background check legislation will do nothing. Red Flag laws are unconstitutional and their effectiveness is debatable, at best. Other outlets and politicians have stumped on the campaign trail or otherwise made big promises about gun control, using mass shootings as an excuse to push new bills.

The only problem is that none of their proposals – many of which are unconstitutional – would do nothing to quell any gun violence. Washington state banned 3D-printed firearms and the law may have even banned polymer gun-making kits. Federally, bill H. R. 7115 attempts to ban most gun-making kits and receiver blanks. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has openly called for mandatory gun confiscations and jailing Americans who refuse. Let’s not even get started on California: Pistol bans, magazine bans, background checks for ammo, assault weapon registrations, unique serial number applications, micro-stamping. The list goes on, yet California continues to experience higher gun violence than ever before.

One Media Outlet Finally Suggested “it”

One media outlet has finally recognized Democrats have been going about treating gun violence in all the wrong ways, for many decades. They’ve finally admitted regular gun control doesn’t work.

“So, why not just try to get rid of the Second Amendment,” They say.

The suggestion is even made that new Supreme Court justices (who would reinterpret the Constitution itself) should be appointed to repeal this core right. Yet even if this civil war-causing suggestion came to fruition, politicians would have to face reality: America owns nearly half the world’s guns.

There is one rather simple solution.

Exercise your Second Amendment right.

Columbine happened during the last assault weapons ban. None of the gun control passed here by the Dems would have stopped the more recent shootings, either.

Predatory behaviours do not require firearms. Predators only require victims.
