After having stepped on a nail that went thru my foot while barefoot, then jumping out of a boat barefooted and landing on a broken bottle and slicing my foot open, I never go barefooted anymore..........

So do you now jump out of boats with boots on?

Or do you not jump out of boats at all?

Childhood memory: My dad sent me down to Alabama every summer to keep me out of trouble in the city up north. All my cousins down there went barefoot all day long to the point where they could walk on the blacktop in 90 degree weather barefoot. I could never develop calluses to do that so I'd walk on the grass beside them - they used to call me a girl on account of that.

So when I got up north, I insisted on walking barefoot as much as possible so I could show my cousins down south the next summer that I could hang with them on the blacktop.

Never quite got to that level of barefoot. You really need to be born and bred down South to do barefoot right and proper.

Yeah, slicing one’s foot open on glass is always a buzzkill.

Did it twice while swimming in less than perfect water and got infections both times.

Boots are great, but aren’t foolproof. My uncle had an exterminating business and stepped on a nail while in a crawlspace. He had little to no feeling in his feet because of diabetes, and he didn’t notice the nail until he got home and couldn’t get his boot off.
