I think you’re talking about Keith B. Richburg’s “Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa” published in 1997.
Richburg was a WAPO correspondent based in Nairobi for about three years. There’s plenty in his book about Somalia.
I’ve read “Out of America” three times over the years, and may very well pick it up again, it’s that good.
Richburg is presumably a liberal, but he’s also a real reporter.
As an retired newspaperman myself — various small dailies around the South for 25 years — I usually can tell within a few pages whether a writer is trying to push some agenda, or is he just going with the facts, hurtful as they may be to his personal prejudices.
And we all have personal prejudices. The question is: Do you have the mental fortitude to recognize a fact when it jumps up and tries to bite you?
Richburg’s “Out of America” passes the test. I cannot recommend this book enough.

I don’t post photos but you could have chosen the photo of her eating in an Ontario restaurant what looked like the biggest plate of food I’ve seen outside of the Coney Island Hot Dog Contest. It was in a Somalian restaurant in a town called Rexdale, I believe. It’s what I would call a photo of “the good life.”
She made a stupid choice, actually, and barely lasted a day. Which was the President’s point.

Pirates of Somalia was indeed a non-fiction story, a true story. These people are animals.

Normally I don’t laugh when stupid people meet with death, but I found myself chuckling when I read this headline.
Seems pretty uplifting to me.
Notice, esp. in travel brochures, that you never see photos of the slums, or dead animals hanging above dirt roads in the 100 degree heat! A good bout of E.coli will set you straight. Did for me in Egypt...puke!
