Numerous fighters have used “Sugar” or “Suga” as a nickname, so “Sweet Pea” for a guy with a first initial of “P” seems understandable. And the “Sweet Pete” origin makes sense as well.
I went to see Pernell Whitaker fight Poli Diaz in ‘91 at Scope in Norfolk, VA. Right behind me was the Norfolk State cheering section chanting and rocking the place with “Sweet Pea, Hoo Hoo, Ha Ha, Sweet Pea! Hoo Hoo, Ha Ha ...” all through the fight. It was great!
Maybe “sweet P”... as in P. ernell Whitaker ...practicing the “sweet science” of boxing. What a way to go.....sad.

He was but so was the car. Have a feeling he never saw it coming. Wanna bet the driver was drunk?
Driver stopped and stayed with him. Doubt they were drunk. It's more likely that Sweet Pea was drunk. Here in Norfolk it's fairly common for black people wearing dark clothes and J walking in the middle of the night to get hit/killed by cars.
