Fun fact from my tour guide days here! The capitol was, of course, originally in New York. The southern states did not like that the capitol and its influence was located in the north and wanted it closer. The northern states relented and agreed to have a new capitol built at a halfway point, on the banks of the Potomac River. While the new capitol was being built, it was temporarily moved to Philadelphia. The northern states agreed to this because they wanted the capitol in Philly and thought that DC would never actually be built. So our capitol is built on one massive reclaimed swamp, hence the humidity and mosquitoes in the summer. Drain THIS!

New York really never did cease being the capitol. It's control of the finance industry makes it the defacto capitol, and the national propaganda apparatus is in fact located in New York.

Washington DC is just New York's puppet.

Actually, the original DC portion of Virginia needs to be given back to DC to punish Virginia for backing the wrong side in the Civil War.

Virginia did in fact back the correct side in the Civil War. It was unfortunate that so many other states decided to invade other states rather than let them leave in peace, and in accordance with what the Declaration of Independence required.

But you are right that Washington's influence on the surrounding area is skewing the votes left nowadays.

Translated to DiogenesLamp's dichotomy: does Washington (Democrats) rule New York (media) or New York (media) rule Washington (Democrats)?

Just the other day I saw where Rush Limbaugh comes down on the side of media ruling over Democrats.

My opinion is, the real dichotomy is between big-city Democrats and everyone else.
