The 13th Amendment did not free all slaves in the boundaries of modern-day US. Members of five Native American nations, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole Nations (known as the Five Tribes), owned black slaves. Located outside the territorial boundaries of the US in a region known as Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma), these sovereign nations were not affected by proclamations or constitutional amendments. Instead, separate treaties had to be made between the US and these Native American nations not only to free slaves, but also to formally end the American Civil War battles and antagonism between American and Native American troops.

Great Link and thanks for edifying me PF. I have learned so much about slavery in the last 24 hours between this and the fact that Indians (Native Americans) owned slaves as well.
Native Americans owned slaves long before the ‘white man’ came to these shores. Every other culture/country/nation owned slaves going back for eons. Americans did not invent slavery but ‘they’ sure want us to pay for it.
I was talking with a client (Indian) and he said that Indians are just one tribe - “The People”. He said the various names they have now are a white man’s invention. I don’t know.
“But - you obviously were from different groups?”
“Well sure. You’re not going to steal and kill and take slaves from your own group! But we are all the same tribe.”
I still find it hard to believe they didn’t have different names for the other groups. (Maybe they did - but they weren’t tribes. Sort of like modern classes of biology with “order”, “family”, etc.)
