Politicians Want to Ban 3D-Printed Guns and "Ghost Guns"

(I posted this topic yesterday and we had started a good discussion, though it was removed because the headline was incorrect. It incorrectly read the senate passed a bill banning 3D-printed guns, but it did not yet. I'd like to pick this discussion up again:)

With the election cycle heating up, some Democratic hopefuls are beginning to propose more gun control legislation. U.S. Senator Time Kaine (D-VA) recently called on the Senate and Virginia's own Assembly to outlaw the distribution of instructions for 3D-printing firearms. This call is likely in direct response to the Trump administration's refusal to block such plans from being distributed. I believe if the Administration were to cooperate, it would set a potentially dangerous precedent for the First Amendment, considering only mere words and text are being disseminated in such plans.

3D-printed guns are just one way to build a firearm without going through any government agency. The ATF has long held that it's legal to build a gun at home with no Federal Firearms License (FFL) required, if the gun is for personal use only. A home-built gun for this purpose doesn't require a serial number in most states. Most gun enthusiasts exercise this right by building AR-15s and tactical rifles using receiver blanks (officially called an 80 percent lower).

Now that the practice has become relatively popular, more gun control legislation is on the table. Bill H. R. 7115 would specifically outlaw "certain firearm receiver castings or blanks, assault weapons part kits, and machinegun parts kits." It also bans the marketing and advertising of such kits.

While none of this legislation has passed at the Federal level, New York has already passed a 3D-printed gun bill. New york's legislation specifically targets any firearm that is "undetectable" by an X-ray machine, like a plastic or polymer gun that was 3D-printed. New York's broad definition of an "undetectable gun" could also outlaw any other gun-making kit that uses polymer parts.

What do you guys think about all this? Assault weapon bans have proven ineffective, so it would appear politicians and gun control advocates are targeting any facet of the Second Amendment they can. Besides banning actual firearms, do you think specifically banning 3D-printed gun plans could set a precedent for the First Amendment? I imagine in a political battle, a compromised piece of legislation could be passed that does just this.

IL Sen. Taunts Gun Owner: Forget the Fine, Maybe We’ll Just Take Your Firearms

Illinois State Sen. Julie Morrison (D) taunted a concerned
gun owner during a town hall by telling him she might forgo
fining him and simply confiscate his firearms.

The exchange was caught on video by the Illinois State Rifle
Association and was tied to proposed fines for keeping
commonly owned semiautomatic firearms in one’s home.

The gun owner then asked, “If I get to keep it–if I pay a
fine and register it–then, how dangerous is it in the first
place and why do you need to ban it all?”

People in attendance applauded the gun owner’s point and
once applause died Morrison said, “Well, you just maybe
changed my mind. Maybe we won’t have a fine at all, maybe
it’ll just be a confiscation and we won’t have to worry
about paying the fine.”

Isn’t that a bit like trying to get embarrassing photographs off the internet?

Most of my friends have built them and none are machinists. I won’t comment on myself but suffice it to say, I’m not a machinist and it’s not all that difficult.

You do not have to be a machinist: Five easy Ways to Make AR15 type Receivers at Home

1. Purchase an 80% blank and finish it with a drill, files and patience, it gets easier with a Dremel type tool. Or use a drill and mill and skill. Many videos on how to do it are available on the Internets. There are numerous sites on the Internets vying for profits, good reviews, and price point.

2. Purchase an 80% receiver and finish it with a programed CDC machine, i.e. the Ghost gunner. Order it on the Internets. The Ghost Gunner has an excellent reputation for creating quality receivers. Defense Distributed is expanding their line to include several different pistol models, including Glock and the Government model .45.

3. Bolt one together from properly sized Aluminum sheets/blocks. Some drilling and tapping required. Specs and templates available on the Internets. This has great potential for building at home. I have not found any kits on the Internets, but they should be easy to create.

4. Print one with a 3D printer. Code and 3D machines available on the Internets. 3D printed receivers have been improved much since the first ones were printed as proof of principle. They tend to be the least durable of the homemade receivers because of the common materials used in inexpensive 3D printers, such as ABS and Nylon. As 3D printers become cheaper and more versatile, the durability of 3D printed receivers will continue to improve.

5. Cast one out of an epoxy resin. Molds, resin and instructions available on the Internets. Reviews of this method indicate it makes a fairly durable and tough receiver. It may not be as tough as aluminum, but they work fairly well.

All of these methods have been shown to work reasonably well, taking various amounts of time and money.

These are not the only methods available. There are many combinations available depending on tools, time, and materials. For example, there are hybrid designs that print out smaller parts, then bolt them together.

These methods need not rely on the Internets. They can be done using old print technology and or video tapes, sold over the counter, or by mail order.

Various of these methods have been available at gun shows from time to time. Sold as kits for cash and carry, there is no digital or paper trail. The kits are simply information and materials, sometimes with a few basic tools.

There are opportunities for gun show entrepreneurs to sell more of these systems as kits, complete with materials and video instructions. The United States is not the former Soviet Union. Every typewriter is not required to be registered and tracked. Every drill press is not owned by the State.

It would be a great money making project for a gun club or a Second Amendment activist group to promote the First Amendment, Second Amendment rights, self reliance, and personal independence, all at once. The systems are inexpensive enough to make a good money making project for a church group, Trail Life,4-H club, or Boy Scout council, if they can develop enough spine for it.

President Trump has shown the country that people no longer need fear the nanny state crybullies. Second Amendment supporters can fight back by exercising their rights.

All of the information is available to mill an AR15 receiver from a block of aluminum, to start completely from scratch. Some have used this method, but it takes more time, skill, and effort than the others listed.

Just how are they going to ban 3d printed guns? Passing such a ban as law will increase rapidly the number of 3d guns.

That’s unbelievable. That illustrates the mentality of many politicians. They’re charged with representing the people’s voice. But when that voice counters their own, individual opinion, they abuse power to supersede the people’s intentions.

Important takeaway for Washington State AR builders: If you have a gun with a non-metallic lower receiver, consider it a compulsory legal defense to document photographically or by another means, with notarization as verification, that your build (at least the lower receiver machining) was completed before July 1, 2019. The verified dated photograph(s) must show unambiguously that the receiver in the photo is your particular piece and not some other. This might be difficult to achieve with no unique number or markings on the receiver.

Sounds doable but when the time comes(CW2) I'll just shoot one of the leftists bas$terds who think their shiny new toy gives theme a right to tread on me and take his government issued M-16

Until then my old deer rifle is enuff for me(grins!)
