This reminds me of that idiot French couple who died at White Sands National Monument a couple years ago. I translated a French news version of the story and one of the comments mentioned similar idiots in the Alps trying to walk around on glaciers in tennis shoes.
These morons are everywhere.
I remember that. They took less water for 3 people than I consume before lunch working outside in NM.
The ones that I like are the Texans who start up the La Luz trail in the Sandias in shorts and a t-shirt and get hypothermia in May.

There is no reason to die there unless you are a complete idiot. It is brutally hot in the summer, bring water a lot. If you get lost the mountains are a point of orientation and you are not then lost. I suspect they did not bring water.
People get all devil-may-care when they visit Death Valley (an experience I've not had, or wanted to have), and whole families have just vanished. But it's nothing compared with the attrition on Everest.
