In some mitigation of his actions, that era was known as "porno chic" where for a brief time porn movies were shown in mainstream theaters and couples were going. There were directors who were trying to make movies that would appeal to mainstream audiences. It was never going to happen, of course, for many reasons. A strange and brief era. But the 70's were pretty much a train wreck.
