I toured ancient Carthage some time ago. We exited the bus and given a time/spot to gather with the guide inside the park. As we walked along the paths to the rally spot we were noticing small stone boxes, hundreds of them lining the paths. Some were ornate with carvings, some were plain. We could not help but wonder what in the world this could be.

Of course, the first thing the guide addressed was the boxes. Turns out they were to hold the remains of the sacrificed children. For +/-700 years the Carthaginians sacrificed the first born of every union. If the first born was still born or did not survive then the second born would be sacrificed. It was very sad and sobering to be standing in such a place.
