Lawmakers who voted last week to block President Donald Trumps declaration of a national emergency along the U.S.-Mexico border will have a tough legal hurdle to overcome after a Friday statement by Attorney General William Barr.
Following Congress rejection of the presidents declaration, POTUS issued his first veto on Friday, claiming authority under the law to make the designation.
Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution, and I have the duty to veto it, the president said.
Barr, who has a stellar reputation among members of both parties, issued a strong statement in support of the presidents veto, as well as the White Houses conclusion that a true emergency exists at the southwest border:
Likely not any more. He spoke against the swamp.
Gosh, I must have missed that report on msnbc & cnn.
Here’s a hot link to your article:
As you said, the National Emergencies Act directly authorizes the presidentgives broad discretionary authority to the President, to identify and respond to emergent circumstances that require a decisive response. And the humanitarian and security crisis that we have on the border right now, is exactly the kind of emergency that Presidents are permitted to address under the National Emergencies Act.
As you eluded to yourself, over the past 40 years, there have been 59 emergencies declared. And many of these have dealt with political conditions like in Burundi, Sierra Leone, Belarus..
The crisis were dealing with today is right on our doorstep and presents a real clear and present danger to the American people. So what youve done is solidly grounded in the law and from the standpoint of protecting the American people, its imperative.
Yet many here said Barr was a horrible pick and Trump was stupid for picking him!!
I wonder if Chuckie and Nan are still gritting their teeth. LOL!
Well that’s refreshing...an AG who supports the President and is willing to say so.
Excellent. Congress should listen.
As you eluded to yourself,
The word is allude.
Editing is dead.

Whoa! Somebody in Washington supported the President! This is a new thing! Imagine if this became a thing that Republicans did!
He spoke against the swamp.

While that is a good thing in itself, Barr is going to have to do a lot more against the Swamp. It has fallen on his shoulders to clean up the corruption and the reputations of the DOJ and FBI. To not do so would be to condone, if not encourage, more corruption and lawlessness in our highest law enforcement agencies.
Americans have lost confidence in their government. I hope Barr is up to the job. If he isn’t, the country is going to continue its downward path.
This is a new thing! Imagine if this became a thing that Republicans did!

Yeah, just imagine. I don’t see them doing it; its just not in the party’s DNA. The Gutless Old Party is weak, feckless, and corrupt. That’s never going to change.
Barr is just a Trump stooge - Nancy Pelosi
When judges release illegals back onto US streets, they should be taken to these demonrats’ streets.
In all due respect to Mr. Barr, why does the President need his endorsement of the veto?
Will it make a difference?
He doesn’t, but; the AG is highly respected by most lawyers.
We have trash in the Rep party like Alexander, who has NEVER
had a real job in his life.
The blessing of the AG is important. First, he is the chief law enforcement officer of the land. Second, and perhaps most important for this case, it means that DOJ has carefully reviewed the case law, precedent, and prior rulings by appellate courts and found that the emergency declaration is fully compliant with previous cases - the legal basis of any appellate court review.
It also signals that DOJ is very confident they can defend this declaration in the real courts - not the court of CNN or MSNBC.
What can I say...people are strange.
All true. We have had 58 national emergencies declared since 1979.
