Go ahead and equate today’s political climate with the American Civil War, or any war, but count me out. I think it’s absurd.
I don't think anyone is doing or saying that.
What has been said about the current situation is this:
"Normal" politics is when different parties within a country fight over the way the existing Constitution (or other foundational document) is to be applied.
"Regime" politics is when different parties argue over whether or not the existing Constitution itself is to be replaced or overthrown.
What we are seeing in this country at present is "Regime" politics.
Regime politics is an existential war "within" a country..."civil" war.
