Nixon did it first.
When Tim Kaine wore a Blue Star Service Banner pin in honor of his son, a deployed Marine, GOP bloggers were saying the pin was the flag of Honduras. So it might be possible to understand why some people might be mad about the flag pin thing.

I met a sailor who served under Nixon. He looked me in the eye and said he would follow Commander Nixon into hell. All of Nixon's men respected him. Nixon was a good poker player, and he would win money from his men. Every penny he won he sent to his men's wife's. A young wife called the base to let her husband know that their washing machine was not working, and that she needed to wash all the diapers asap. The young sailor was deployed, so Nixon bought her a new washing machine, and had it delivered the same day. After his deployment he went home and saw the new washing machine. He wanted to know how much did it cost. His wife thought that he paid for the washing machine, but he knew that he had not.Later he found out that Nixon paid for the washer, and he paid Nixon back. Then Nixon sent the money to his wife. Now that is what I call a leader of men!
