. . . and that the judge doesn’t allow “I was just reporting what another newspaper said” as a defense.

He shouldn’t allow that, because the newspapers are all in a conspiracy. “People of the same trade seldom meet together, Adam Smith wrote, “even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.”

All major newspapers cooperate with wire services, and a wire service is a virtual meeting of journalists. It is naive in the extreme to assume that they do not conspire against the public. In fact, they do so in broad daylight. They conspire to go along and get along ideologically, and to propagandize in favor of each others’ “objectivity" and savaging the reputation of anyone who questions it.
