Being a mix of Scots-Irish and Tsalagi, when I first read the story and viewed the picture, I felt the elder was being disrespected...I viewed the video and still felt some disrespect...After more and more comments from other FReepers, I did a little research into Nathan Phillips and saw how close he was to AIM...The elder was wrong to face up with the teenagers and as an “elder” in the Omaha tribe, he should not act in the way he did...I thought the young man was being disrespectful, but he was standing his own ground...That is to be commended...
I, being of mixed heritage, refuse to use the term “Native American” because that side of my ancestry was here before this was America...I don’t use the word “Indian” either because, again, that side of my family was not from India...I prefer to use “tribal”....
At any rate, the “elder” was in the wrong...He should act as an “elder” and NOT as an “activist”...
You should make up mind on what you saw.
