To start:
On December 10, 2018, the Department of Justice published its final rule regarding a bump stock ban in the United States.
The rule was published on December 26th, 2018.

Automatic weapons by definition is one in which the trigger is pulled and will continue to load and fire ammunition until the trigger is released, the ammunition is gone, or the firearm is jammed.
Semi-automatic firearms is one in which fire one shot per single pull of the trigger. Even with a Bump Stock the trigger is released and pulled again for each shot.
By definition then it is not an automatic or machine gun.

Pretty hard to argue that point.
There are other devices that do the same thing without using a recoil slide, they use a hand crank, been around for 50+ years, wonder if they will get marketed next.

You can shoot any semi auto rifle/pistol as a full auto with trigger and recoil control. You don’t need a hunk of plastic to achieve this.

But not pulled again by flexing the trigger finger, there’s the problem in your statement.
The shooter need only continuously grip the stock without moving the trigger finger.

I have no desire to go to jail. But if I was all about automatic fire that is going to go all over the place, why not do it right.

There are complications, you need a select fire mechanism to be able to choose between single shot, 3 shot burst and full auto.
The trigger, recoil and ejection springs need to be modified. The magazine latch needs to be tuned.
It takes a competent full auto armorer to get it right or you just spend your time clearing jams.
The law talks about function of the TRIGGER, not the finger.

Of course you can, but “bump stock” sounds scary to the uninformed, therefore said uninformed will support banning it. It is a “common sense” position. And we all know there is nothing more uncommon.
What gives the government the right to regulate any machine gun? A well prepared militia needs those.

Right, and they don’t have them, even with bump stocks.
Yeah, they’re gay, but the technique used to ban bump stocks *can and will* be used by the next democrat to ban AR-15 and AK pattern rifles. All it now takes is an executive order “deeming” them machine guns.
