The Botafumeiro in Santiago has been used in one form or another since the 11th century. It was originally used to mask the odor of unwashed pilgrims and as an attempt to kill lice and other parasites. It also used to be attached by a hook so there were accidents but no recorded deaths. The most famous accident was in 1499 when Catherine the Princess of Aragon was in the Cathedral and it came off the hook and flew out of a window.
