Let me tell you a story.
A prominent democrat decides to run for president, but loses the nomination to a younger, more charismatic guy, who wins the election that November.
Eight years later, this same democrat runs for president again, this time getting the nomination, but loses in November to a republican who is viscerally hated by the left.
There are protests across the country, there are protests at the new republican president's inauguration, and continue throughout the first two years of his presidency.
In the following mid-terms, democrat gains are shallower than historically expected, and the republicans actually GAIN seats in the Senate.
The politicians referred to, however, are not Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, but Hubert Humphrey, John Kennedy and Richard Nixon.
If this pattern continues, Donald Trump will be re-elected in a massive landslide in two years, just as Nixon did in 1972.
The left went too far then, has again, and will likely continue to do so.
We shall see what happens.
Love your writing style, and I hope your theory is right.
Thanks. As a historian, it’s fascinating watching the same things happen again, but with different people.
How did that end up for Nixon?
I hope and pray you are correct but I would observe this is not the America of 1972. True we had plenty of commies running about back then but not entrenched in so many areas as today.
You are correct, but the other side of that coin is that there are far more conservatives now than there were then, with the media having changed and is far less concentrated (though they try to shut down any opposition).
No parallel is exact, but the large events are flowing in the same direction.
And further, just like in ‘72, the democrats will probably nominate a far leftist, who will be offputting to the people.
As I said, we shall see.
The California DemoKKKrats did it in front of God and everybody.
They'll export it to nearly every KKKrat-controlled state next, bwcause they know their Media will never say a word about it.
Kold Kamala.
AKA "Kamella De Vil"...
“How did that end up for Nixon?”
Yes, that point is the obvious downside to the parallel, and cannot be ignored.
Which is why Trump needs to be careful, and not put a rope around his own neck, as Nixon did.
GOP landslides are impossible given California, New York, and most of the other areas of the Northeast, and the increasingly blue demographic spreading across the country (due to unchecked immigration). When Nixon was president 4 out of 5 Americans were white. Now it’s only 3 out of 5. Any win by Trump in 2020 will have to involve a similar path he took in 2016.
History never repeats itself.
But, it sure does rhyme all the time.
But has enough of the country got into full gimme mode that that kind of whack job is viable?
In any event appreciate your parallels and interesting to speculate.
...and since then, there has been almost 50 years of steadily increasing liberal indoctrination in our education system.
Yes there were extremists back then but most Americans knew what an extremist was. Today folks like Cortez are seen as fresh new hopeful faces in government by almost half the electorate.
We have much work ahead of us....dire work.
I had also read that there were indications of substantial voter fraud during the Kennedy election that were never challenged or investigated. What the Democrats don’t seem to get is that when they impose legislators or executives on us against our will, it never works out long term.
A perfect example is the whole abortion issue. Never, even now has there been even a plurality of Americans who approve of legal abortion. The courts illegally imposed it upon us by legislating from the bench against our will.
The anti-abortion activists are just as persistent as the abolotionists who started protesting against slavery in the 1600’s. It was wrong and those who knew it objected politically and in many other ways until right prevailed.
We have not changed that much as a people I’m also seeing indications of a burgeoning very conservative trend in millenials.
We also had near Socialism under FDR, and clawed our way back from that. The not-as-bad Socialism under Obama has not been forgotten.
Commies ran the FDR administration. They were deeply entrenched. Deeply.
Depends on how much vote fraud the dems manage to put in place in key states before 2020.
History don’t repeat itself, but it sure do rhyme.
Didn’t see your comment before I posted mine. Great minds think alike!
