I think you are right about Khrushchev but in 1989, Boris Yeltsin visited a U.S. supermarket as well and was similarly amazed. He said at the time (paraphrasing) that if average Soviets could see an average U.S. supermarket, that there would be a revolution.
Two years later, that's exactly what happened!
