The problem with Whole Foods is their regular customers. They are, across the board, across the country, useless, ignorant, and miserable. Theyre worse than miserable, theyre angry. They are quite literally the opposite of every Whole Foods employee Ive ever encountered. Walk through any store any time of daybut especially 5:30pm on a weekday or Saturday afternoon during football seasonand invariably you will encounter a sneering, disdainful horde of hipster Zombies and entitled 1%ers.
They stand in the middle of the aisles, blocking passage of any other cart, staring intently at the selection asking themselves that critical question: which one of these olive oils makes me seem coolest and most socially conscious, while also making the raw vegetable salad Im preparing for the monthly condo board meeting seem most rustic and artisanal?
If you are a normal human being, when you come upon a person like this in the aisle you clear your throat or say excuse me, hoping against hope that they catch your drift. They dont. In fact, they are disgusted by your very existence. The idea that you would violate their personal shopping spacewhich seems to be the entire storeor deign to request anything of them is so far beyond the pale that most times all they can muster is an Ugh!
Over the years I have tried everything to remain civil to these people, but nothing has worked, so Ive stopped trying. Instead, I walk over to their cart and

Whole Foods: Americas Temple of Pseudoscience

I'm continually amazed at those so full of themselves that a regular parking space is somehow insulting and they feel entitled to park in the fire lane outside grocery stores.
Best Post Award!
We average citizens are just jealous that an Upper Middle Class income person can eat so well at a Whole Foods, instead of the garbage we call food.
Their olive section is top notch for health, quality and variety. So for the Average Middle Class FR readers, limiting shopping to Whole Foods nuts and olives is the best thing you can do for your body.
Instead of blanket stereotypes about a quality food store like Whole Foods or even Sprouts, I prefer the word GRATITUDE. I am grateful America provides good options.
Since their change to BezosMart, I now use Sprouts.
Nuts and olives of high quality like these is what your body cries out for. That and a dose of Gratitude.
And the Best Post Award does not hand out Participation Award trophies.
There is a Holefoods near me. Never been in it.
I think that survey would show, at the least, that they think they are better, smarter, more culturally enlightened, tolerant, accepting of the “Average American”.
Problem is, while they might have high paying jobs in marketing, sales, IT, most of them can’t run a chainsaw, change their own oil or tire, nor could they install a ceiling fan. And they are the least tolerant folks around.
One of the things I find comical is that they firmly believe that they are doing something socially, environmentally and globally responsible.
“We get all our coffee through fair trade practices from Colombia. We don’t take advantage of the workers picking the beans, by hand. We make sure they are paid a living wage.”
Sure you do. They don’t know what those people are being paid, if that even comes up in a conversation. They’ll ignore the fact that the bean picker is making 4 cents a day, but they can brag to everyone that they got ‘fair trade’ coffee for $30 a pound.

i’ve only been to 1 Whole Foods to get some jam for a sick relative. It was exactly like this- a bunch of old hippies taking 10 minutes to read every line on every label. and blocking the aisles. With an old guy strumming a guitar by the check outs. I do not belong.
Another reason to avoid buffet (slop troughs) eating. I am no longer shocked by people’s anti-social, unsanitary behavior. While disgusting, this is tame compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen, going all the way back to the 1970s, in the wake of the hippie movement.
“Glad it wasnt just me that experienced the anger and ignorance of some Whole Foods shoppers.”
the boulder colorado store is EXACTLY like the article described, but with one exception: the employees are all way over-tatted, drugged out freaks that act as entitled and brain dead as their customers ...
$9.00 / Lb is too much for water-laden steamed vegetables. Hope you were on a high protein diet, focused only on the (”organic, local, cage-free”) meats.
“Westbrae Unsweetened Ketchup”
basically, the ONLY unsweetened ketchup ... gotten very hard to find around here retail ... so i finally just gave up and order it by the case from amazon ...
I get out to Seattle area about once per year and there is plenty of leftists on display... almost everywhere. I read years ago that many of them escaped California and ended up ruining Seattle.
Might have to visit these stores to continue my “research”, compare to similar stores on the east coast. Staff is friendly here too but lots of non-human hair color, plus body piercings / tatoo. BTW when I hear “Bellevue”, I hear “Kojak’s” voice about sending someone to Bellevue ... a psychiatric hospital in NYC. That’s my impression (right or wrong) of Bellevue, WA.
I thought it was funnier’n Hell. Then again, I live in a city dominated by Whole Foods types. The Walmart of the 1%ers.
I guess the blessing of all these Gluten-free hysteria folks is they make these easier for that tiny fraction of one percent who actually have celiac disease, a very rare but very serious disease.
Whole-anon?
NYC Whole Foods/Trader Joe/Fairway stores have narrow aisles. You do end up blocking other people.
