This has bothered me from jump. A house near a country club and you have to go upstairs. Doesn’t pass the smell test to me. Upscale houses have at least one bathroom on the main floor. This is a fever dream from Prof. Ford.
There are plenty of other reasons to disbelieve the nutcase than the bathroom issue. Don’t forget this was a teen party. Beer drinking. Downstairs bathrooms could’ve been occupied. I think it was Archie Bunker who said, “you can never buy beer, you just rent it.”
