It MIGHT be possible to backdoor a former president into the whitehouse by having him serve in the House and then he elected Speaker before impeaching the President and Vice President. The 22 amendment only states that a person cannot be ELECTED more than twice. Assuming that the idea was to switch parties in the White House you’d have to impeach both at the same time, since the VP would move up the ladder like Ford did when Nixon resigned.

It’s a long shot at best.

Correct! This is technically legal, but (as you say) so unlikely that it’s not a practical concern.

There also seems to be some gray area as to whether a former twice-elected President could be elected or appointed VP, and then assume the office and finish the term of a dead or resigned President.
