If you were wondering whats wrong with our society, today weve just find the answer. Maybe. The thing is, Ive always suspected that too much technology is going to alienate people and, after a while, totally obliterate what makes us human. And what makes us human after all? Well, maybe the fact that were very social and also very smart creatures, who used to enjoy other peoples company. Let me explain: this is not a myth, but Gods honest truth: back in the day, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth freely (like in the eighties), people used to enjoy other peoples company. I am not kidding. As that old adage goes, back in the day (even though I am not THAT old) people used to own books a, and some of them actually read them. Moreover, when people met in pubs or at a ball game or whatever public event, they used to talk about various things, like the last book theyve read, or a good art-movie, or a nice play you know the drill. Well, if youre born after the last rain, you actually dont, but thats not the point.
The point is, todays young generation was raised on the Internet and sucks its life-juice from smartphones and similar smart-gadgets. And I mean that literally. When I first discovered the Internet, back in the late 90s, I had already amassed what its generally being called a classical education, and Ive already read hundreds of books, including philosophy, political science, world-history, classic literature and science fiction. I was perfectly capable of sustaining a PvP conversation, without constantly pecking at my smartphone or google-ing stuff out. This seems not to be the case anymore.

I recently saw a reference to cell phones as ‘electronic pacifiers’.
Nailed it ...
It is kind of pathetic. I have some younger friends, and they will go meet up to go out to a bar, and then sit there and spend half the time texting, instead of just socializing with the people they came to hang out with.
I don’t think those of us who grew up before ubiquitous broadband Internet can ever fully understand what it is like to grow up with it from birth as a permanent always-was-there part of the environment.
It would be something like... if Jupiter decided to suddenly become a small sun, trying to understand what a sky with only one sun would be like.
That is sad.

My daughter had a practical answer - Mom can’t hear what I’m saying to my friends, and neither can their parents.
I reminded her that I can see chat logs of who she messaged, and if necessary, pull the messages themselves.
That she can have some privacy, but if I have concerns about her safety, she has NO privacy.
