I don’t get this business about being invited to a funeral.
In my experience, there are no invitations as such. Rather, those who want to pay their respects will attend .
Maybe my world is different than others. I have just never heard of the concept of getting an invitation for a funeral, or waiting to see if you are invited. If you want to pay your respects you simply show up. In my experience anyway.
Celebrity funerals have invite lists just like they have cocktail party invite lists. Since McCain thinks he was a celebrity, he developed an invite list. Yes, it is odd, he is no celebrity, he was only an elected official who served way too long.

At the very least, it helps you plan for the services (e.g., how many seats are needed at the internment), how many prayer cards need to be printed, and especially how many to plan for the reception.
Most people don't realize these things until they actually have to go through them.
