1) The presence of reporters at a TownHall often changes the very nature of the TownHall. The people play to the cameras and media, and not to the Moderator or Guests invited to be on stage. The people on stage want to be the center of attention and react jealously in a self-defeating manner when the press gets all the attention.... Just ask Jessee Jackson.

2) Her primary opponent is still on the ballot with a big base. He could create a great media event for himself with the media present. The falling tree makes no noise unless the media hears it and has it live on TV.

3) The people on stage lack self-confidence that they will come off looking good in a space where they control the mic and agenda.
