Alan Alda reveals he has Parkinson's disease: "I'm not angry"

Alan Alda has Parkinson's disease. In an appearance on "CBS This Morning" Tuesday, the award-winning actor, best known for his relatable portrayal of Army Capt. "Hawkeye" Pierce in the TV series "M*A*S*H," revealed he was diagnosed three-and-a-half years ago.

"I've had a full life since then," he said. "I've acted, I've given talks, I help at the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook. I started this new podcast. And I noticed that – I had been on television a lot in the last couple of weeks talking about the new podcast – and I could see my thumb twitch in some shots and I thought, it's probably only a matter of time before somebody does a story about this from a sad point of view, but that's not where I am."

Alda said he got tested for the disease after reading an article about how one of the early signs of Parkinson's is acting out dreams.

"I was having a dream that someone was attacking me and I threw a sack of potatoes at them. But what I was really doing was throwing a pillow at my wife," he said....

Yeah, that’s like saying I’m angry about my amputation. Angry at who?

Well, we all have to go from something, nevertheless, it's still sad news.
Also sad that the cast of MASH is almost gone.
Probably my favorite TV show of all time - for it's longevity, if nothing else.

....after graduation, he served for a year at Fort Benning, and then six months in the United States Army Reserve on a tour of duty in Korea.

Today, I like Alan Alda. Back in the 1970s and early-to-mid 1980s, I thought of him as a preachy liberal. He almost ruined MASH with his liberal plot lines and preaching. But he stopped with the preaching and every time that I’ve seen him recently, he just seems like a nice guy.

Never cared for his whiny liberal, sarcastic, smart aleck humor.

I wouldn’t wish this on anyone...

Because he’s a narcissist and it’s all about him. I got a disease and I should be angry that I’m going to die but I’m so enlightened that I accept my death unlike the unwashed masses that cry out in fear and anguish but I am accepting of my fate.

BS.

He does his best work when he's playing a villain. M*A*S*H missed a huge opportunity by not letting it's characters develop in a way they normally would have in war. They kept them too one dimensional. I remember a scene where BJ goes out into the field and has to leave a patient behind to keep the op on track. Back at camp Hawkeye gives him the liberal line and BJ tells him to shove it because BJ was thinking like a soldier now. The show need a lot more of that, but it stayed cookie cutter. Maybe the 70s wasn't ready for that kind of character development on TV?

Agreed. My favorite Alda character is Lester from Crimes and Misdemeanors.

At least Alda saw war through an experienced point of view, having himself served in Korea. Yes, he’s a lefty, but he manages to come across as likeable.

Sad to hear about his diagnosis.

Alan, you've always been a worthless, liberal POS. You're sitcom was unwatchable garbage because of you and you did everything you could possible do and say to trash our side for decades.

You better consider finding Jesus or you're going to end up where you truly belong. You made your own bed and I dont’ feel one iota of sympathy for the likes of you.
