IBM has done the same for many years. This I would think is normal.
This is akin to the liberal professors with tenure ignoring the army of lesser paid adjuncts. The inferiors don’t matter.
What I see every day. The pay is still good for the Contractors/Subs.
It really hurts them when they Sub to a Contractor (Prime contract) and there are no benefits. They are better off going 1099 for better hourly rates. Few do since the vast majority of them don’t understand business.
Living accommodations for the single ones with no family in the Bay Area are $1,000/month bed in dorms or cars. Some rent small box trucks and live in the back of it in the parking lots of the work location. Lots of RVs lining the streets in front of $2mm homes........
Kind of funny to watch it all.
The majority of them are overly arrogant.
In IT, however, contractors are typically paid a higher rate than employees. They don’t get any benefits and can be released at any time, so they demand higher pay - and they receive it.
They also have to pay their own SS so that is a 7.5% pay cut right off the top.
But if that is what you can get what choice do you have?
So basically this is an article about corporate tech promoting “white privilege” and relegates contractors to a status I just coined as “riggers”...
The irony is astounding, especially-considering the demographic of many of those holding tech stocks and the fact that this is all a tactic to boost stock price.
Hypocrites.
That is true, but the guys making $110 an hour just smile and pay it.

Seems odd for this to be coming from Bloomberg News. Shouldn’t they be pro H1-b visa? Are they saying it is bad for an American to be treated this way, but not foreigners on an H1-b, who are treated worse?
All of Silicon Valley has done this for scores of years
The contractors I knew preferred it. If they got a better offer they would leave and go work somewhere else. This aint rocket science if you dont like they pay and perks put your resume out there
True to f all the contractors in all fields that I have worked with
All of which is meaningless for the H1B visa holders that are essentially indentured servants, working for far less because they hope the job can lead to American citizenship.
True.
My meaning is that working as a contractor you are responsible for the employers share as well.
My sister worked as a contract home healthcare nurse and did not realize that fact. She got hit by the Feds with a bill for her SS that took her a decade to pay off.
The firm she worked for never gave her a clue as to laws dealing with working for them.
The government doesnt do much to let people know either.
This was before 1099.
But she was young at the time.
Really, I think we should get rid of the employer share - let people pay their own taxes. This will make people realize just how much they're actually paying in taxes, that they don't even know they're paying. It's ridiculous.
The firm she worked for never gave her a clue as to laws dealing with working for them. They considered her a private contractor and they never let her know or told her what that designation meant.
I agree.
I also believe we should do away with corporate taxes. People dont realize that corporations do not pay taxes, they collect taxes. All corporate taxes are paid by the end consumer.
Government is all about hiding how much taxes the people really pay.
